MU students have won the Liderpack award

A group of students from the Industrial Design Engineering Degree of the Mondragon University Polytechnic High School has won the Liderpack 2023 Award in the Young Design category, and will represent the State in the World Star Student Awards, the international awards organized by the World Packaging Organization.

The winning project, Magma, was made by the students Natale Armendariz (Ordizia), Maider Armentia (Getxo), Oier Bengoetxea (Gamiz-Fika) and Itziar Sánchez (Getxo). It is a protein bottle with an "ergonomic and stackable design", which "guarantees durability, as well as convenience in distribution", as explained by Mondragon University.

The single-material translucent refillable container is made of 100% recycled and recyclable plastic and is aesthetically "minimalist and easy to stack". "The closure is made with laces, the spoon is integrated in the lid and its shape is ergonomic", they explained. This team won second place last June with Magma in the National Packing and Packaging Awards in Valencia.

Liderpack awards

  • What are Liderpack awards? Liderpack is looking for innovative packaging for use in the final consumer and industrial sectors or in transport and logistics operations. In the POS section, the best solutions for moving purchase decisions around the store are recognized.
  • Who can participate? Designers of packaging, packaging, labels, closure systems, dosages, POS companies, advertising and branding agencies, as well as brands that have implemented improvements in their product packaging and POS can participate. Students compete in the "Young Design" category through the National Packaging and Packaging Design and Sustainability Packaging Awards organized by the Packaging and Packaging Innovation Cluster.
  • What is rewarded? Originality, ergonomics, innovation, creativity, design, manufacturing process, materials used and commitment to sustainability are rewarded.
  • Passport for international acceptance: The jury will also select the works that will represent Spain in the WorldStars for Packaging competition, organized by the World Packaging Organization (WPO), and the young design projects that will compete in the international WorldStar Student competition.

The WorldStar Packaging Awards are one of the main events of the World Packaging Organization and one of the industry's leading international awards. This event projects the importance of the continuous advancement of design and technology in the shipping industry and sets benchmarks in the sector.

Spanish shipbuilding tends to get very good results in this competition.
WorldStars demonstrates a continuous commitment to innovation in the global shipping industry and creates a standard of excellence and international quality in the field of ship manufacturing.

Only packaging items that have been awarded in national competitions can participate in WorldStar. All works awarded with the Liderpack (Packaging category) can be submitted individually to the WorldStar Packaging Awards organized by the World Packaging Organization (it costs approximately 650 euros to register). Hispack and the Spanish Packaging Association will award a grant to participate in a selection of awarded works (from Hispack members and/or exhibitors).

Popeye Awards

Connection with the global marketing and retail industry.

Since 2015, the Liderpack awards in the POS category have received the "Popai Award", an award recognized by the Popai Global Marketing and Retail Association, which operates in 45 countries and has more than 1,700 members worldwide.
This international connection gives the works awarded in the POS categories greater visibility in the foreign market, as an example of the quality and creativity of Spanish companies in the retail and POS sector.

Panel of Experts

There will be a panel of experts judging the works presented in the Packaging category and another panel of experts will judge the POS category.

The jury will also choose a special award: the Liderpack award for sustainability in packaging, following the same specifications as WorldStar.
The jury for the Liderpack awards is made up of industry professionals and experts in innovation, design, sustainability, materials, machinery and marketing. The works are evaluated individually and with the sum of the scores obtained, by consensus, it is determined whether they deserve a Liderpack or not.

The "Best in Show" award will be given, respectively, to the two creations that stand out the most in the fields of packaging and POS.

To determine the winners, the following aspects are taken into account: content protection and conservation; ease of handling, filling, closing and opening; appropriate information; attractive at the point of sale; graphic and industrial design; ergonomics; production quality; present material to cook cost reduction; durability; reuse, recycle or throw away; the ingenuity and originality of the assembly; and adapting to culture, social customs and the Spanish market.

A cardboard container for honey, a single-material medicine blister, recyclable because it does not contain aluminum, luxurious eco-rechargeable covers for cosmetic creams, practical containers for single-dose detergents, lids for paella containers, velvet labels for premium olives, or boxes to advertise summer fragrances are this year the Graphispack Association and the Spanish Packaging Some of the 45 Packaging and Advertising works awarded in the Liderpack Awards organized by the association.
