They create an app that turns smart watches into a metronome to stop stuttering

Samsung Spain has achieved through artificial intelligence that its devices vibrate to the rhythm of language to help people with speech disorders.

Tock, tock, tock, tock... Like a metronome. Tock, tock, tock. Samsung smart watches are converted into this tool with the help of artificial intelligence. Tock, tock, tock. Thus they seek to help the 1% of the world's population who suffer from a speech disorder.

Now, the click of the metronome has been replaced by a vibration on the wrist. After several months of research, engineers from Samsung's Spanish subsidiary, within the Technology with Purpose program, and Cheil have brought 'rhythm therapy' to mobile devices, a proven speech therapy technique to create a subconscious compass in the brain that improve linguistic fluency.

Various medical research has shown that the vast majority of people who stutter speak fluently when following a rhythm. That solution is called Impulse, an app recently approved by Google that turns the smartwatch into a 'metronome'.

Thanks to an algorithm based on Natural Language Processing, it analyzes and transforms words into rhythmic vibrations. In this way, a sensory pattern is generated that acts as an invisible and silent assistant on the users' wrist.

The smartwatch tells the user the tempo of each phoneme or word, according to the particularities of the patient's disorder. Through this physical support through vibration, the user knows their own speech rhythm, which allows them to avoid blocks in diction and facilitate fluency in their speech.

The application has more than 250 rhythm and tone exercises that increase in difficulty as the user progresses in speech control. There are four levels of exercises that allow you to practice words or phrases, but also the intonation necessary to promote fluent speech in conversations.

With 'Boost your voice', users program the voice pattern they want to use regularly, and that will be the one that is activated in times of speech blocking. Boost your rhythm, meanwhile, it allows you to practice syllables through Voice Wave Recognition Technology that compares the reference audio with that made by the user. This option also displays a performance report with the results so they can be shared with a speech therapist.

The last two options help you practice the intonation of the sentences and help you practice your own texts, written directly in the application or by uploading a file with the narration. In this section, the AI analyzes the text and creates a vibration pattern based on it and the intonation you want to give. A significant advance to improve the quality of life of users.
